Updated:
We love travelling to all kinds of parks and reserves, because only there you can see the beauty of nature, breathe clean fresh air, meet new species of animals, birds and plants.
That is why after our excursion to the island of Hvar, we did not hesitate to see what other places there are near us. Since we stayed in Makarska and were here for 4 days already (there are a lot of hotels here, we usually book rooms on this website ), we started to look for nature reserves nearby, because in Croatia it’s interesting to look at architecture, of course, but we still want to see the natural beauty.
As a reminder, it was 2019. Croatia started to open for us from a completely different side. Therefore, we were not going to stop and wanted to get new impressions every day.
Even at the stage of planning a trip to Croatia, looking through possible destinations for excursions on the Getyourgide website , we noticed one interesting natural park – Biokovo.
It is located in the vicinity of Makarska and from the place where we were going to stay, you can easily get there. But it is desirable to be accompanied by a guide, because after reading reviews about this place it turned out that the road there is very dangerous and even experienced drivers are afraid to drive there.
So we immediately discarded the option of travelling by rented car and settled on the option of excursion from Makarska, and not on an individual, but on a group tour, which already includes tickets.
A small note: our excursion, which I am telling you about, did not include a visit to the Skywalk, because at that time it did not exist yet. Now, however, almost every tour of Biokovo Park includes a visit to the Skywalk (open to the public in 2020), so don’t be surprised that the tour I give below already includes this option.
From Makarska: excursion to Biokovo Nature Park with Skywalk
Tour itinerary with approximate duration of stops:

You may find it useful: one of the options for travelling to Makarska is to go via Split Airport (this is the closest international airport to Makarska in Croatia). If you want to navigate the place better and get to your holiday destination without incident after your arrival, I suggest you read our article about Split Airport.
At the time of this excursion, which I describe in this article, the glass platform was not yet there, we went there a second time on the same excursion in the summer of 2021, specifically to visit the Biokovo Skywalk, it already included a visit to this novelty. We took the same route (with minor changes) and even with the same guide.
By car
On foot
The Skywalk platform is located at an altitude of 1200 metres, the platform’s ledge is 12 metres above the cliff. When you stand on this platform is breathtaking, under the feet of the abyss, sometimes looking down was dizzy. But it did not spoil the impressions of such an innovation, here the platform fits into the general atmosphere of the place.
As you can see there are quite a few people who want to see the beauty. And I haven’t yet taken a picture of the queue behind us waiting to get through
Often the price of an entrance ticket to the site is included in the price of the tour, but if you go here on your own – the ticket costs 8 euros, children under 7 years old go free. Skywalk is open daily from 8:00 to 20:00.
Controllers always stand near the site and make sure that the number of people present does not exceed 30 people. Although the bridge is strong, nobody wants to take any risks, so the management of the site tries to provide all safety precautions.
There is a reason we came here for the second time, because it was a pleasure to see such beauty in a new way. It makes you feel like you are part of something marvellous afterwards
We stayed at the site for 30 minutes, so we had plenty of time to take photos. Even though we came here for the second time, our impressions of the place haven’t changed in any way: at first it was scary, then calm, it was difficult to climb, but the stops and the end of the journey left a pleasant feeling.
It all started with the fact that we had agreed in advance with the guide about the meeting point. Unfortunately, the hotel where we stayed was not included in the list of stops of the tour bus. So we decided that it would be Agava apartments , this place was the closest to our hotel, and we could not walk in this area. At least this way we got to see this part of town.
For those who are just planning their holidays, I will leave here a link to all the hotels in Makarska , there are a lot of them and at different prices.
This is the view from below, the mountains look great and I couldn’t believe that I would already be there on the same day
After meeting the guide, he immediately invited us to get on the bus and we went to pick up other tourists. By the way, our bus was air-conditioned, so we didn’t have to steam and didn’t feel like you were sitting in a tin can.
On the way we enjoyed the scenery of Makarska, mountain ranges and other surroundings.
Options for travelling to the Biokovo Nature Park
There are various ways to visit the park:
These were the kinds of views we had along the way from the windows of the bus
This is the most beautiful shot of the coast on the way up the mountain, Makarska opens up here like in the palm of your hand, we even managed to find our hotel
The car goes on rather dangerous winding roads, the serpentine is steep, maybe at first glance it does not look scary, but when you pass this road personally do not think so.
This was the serpentine road to the park, looking at these photos now it is breathtaking how we squeezed into our seats and hoped that we would get there without any accidents
At the entrance we came across a monument dedicated to the Second World War. I was very surprised to see such a monument here, I didn’t think they would allow something like this to be built here, after all, this is the entrance to the park.
You don’t often see such a monument at the entrances to parks, but here it can be called a special feature of Biokovo
At first everything was great – a good wide road, not many cars, pine trees and greenery all around. And then it started to get scary. The road was becoming narrow, and even two cars could not pass each other. Blind turns became more frequent, when you couldn’t see until the last moment whether someone was coming towards you.
When the road became easier, we were able to look around and take photos of the natural wonders, the forest at the foot of the park is thick and dark
Moreover, if at first the road went on flat terrain, then further on it was like this – on one side – rocks with sharp stones, on the other – a multi-metre cliff with a ghostly fence, which was of no use in case of an accident.
Only ‘pockets’ – special areas for cars to separate from each other – saved us in case of meeting with oncoming cars. But they were quite rare, and often our bus reversed along the winding narrow road.
Croatia has 8 National Parks and 11 Natural Parks (by the way, Biokovo is a natural park). If you want to visit them, I advise you to read some articles on our website, where we describe in detail all the nuances of visiting them:
But despite the dangerous road, we admired the magnificent views. The nature of Biokovo changes with the landscape. The higher you go up into the mountains, the scarcer the vegetation becomes.
At the bottom there are masses of flowers, magnificent pines, deciduous trees. Beech, Dalmatian pine, spruce, hornbeam, oak are widespread. As you go higher, you can see that there are fewer trees, but as far as I know, humans have also had a hand in reducing the forests in the mountains.
Here you can see many species of plants. In fact, this is a very small part of what we saw, the flora here is very, very numerous
In order to increase the amount of fertile agricultural land, forests were cut down and burnt. In some places, traces of human activity are visible – small houses, stone fences for cattle, olive trees. And the road continued to ‘delight’ with its unpredictability.
And soon the first stop was waiting for us. And right next to the stop there was a viewing platform, located at an altitude of about 1200 metres. There are such signs at the observation platforms on the roads.
Finally we got to the signpost that told us we were already at 1200 metres above sea level, this was our first small victory
We pull up and admire the views. We were given about 30 minutes for this, which was quite enough.
The views were gorgeous, but we realised that this wasn’t the end. In anticipation of even more spectacular views, we travelled onwards
The information board has some useful information about the park, the height of the observation deck and the views from it. From here we could see the villages of Makarska, Tučepi, Podgora, Pelješac peninsula, the islands of Hvar, Brač, Vis, Korčula, Solta.
The stand also provides information about mountain vegetation, flowers and plants that can be found in the mountains. There is also a small souvenir shop where you can buy maps, brochures, discs and other information about the park.
The information stand told about all the plants in this park, I was surprised to see how rare flowers and trees are here
It is worth noting that it is already quite cool in the mountains even at this altitude. And the higher up, the colder and windier it became. The wind was blowing quite cold and strong. But as we knew that the weather would get worse, we dressed warmer.
Similar excursions from Makarska to Biokovo Nature Park
Makarska: sightseeing tour of the Skywalk in Biokovo by tuk-tuk (from July to September the cost of the tour is 69 euros, in other months – 59 euros). If you want something unusual you can take a tuk-tuk ride to the park. This is not a standard transport for Croatia, but there are such exotics here too. The duration of the tour is about 3 hours, during this time you can stop at many places in the park and see it almost completely.
From Makarska: transfer to Biokovo Skywalk, including entrance (tour cost 35 euros per person regardless of seasonality). The duration of the tour is also about three hours, but this tour also has its advantages: you can go without queuing to the Skywalk observation deck.

Then the bus took us to the next viewpoint and the highest point, located at an altitude of about 1800 metres. This is also where the TV tower is located. There is also a small attraction here – the small church of St. George.
We saw this TV tower on the approach to the park, and we saw it again when we were approaching the highest point of the park. It was a kind of landmark that told us how far we had to go to get there
The views are spectacular, words cannot describe the feelings we experienced. It is really very wonderful, breathtaking and beautiful.
This viewpoint is about forty minutes to an hour. This was also enough for us, we were able to look around and take photos.
By the way, we did not immediately notice, but the clouds were already floating past us and under us, so high we climbed. And next to the observation platform there were pyramids made of stones, built at a height.
By the way, from the other side, behind the mountain pass, we saw another country – Bosnia and Herzegovina. I did not think that I would be able to look at a neighbouring country from such a point.
By the way, one of the most popular excursion destinations from Makarska, is the ancient city of Mostar, which is located in neighbouring Bosnia and Herzegovina, so, not so long ago we posted on this site a review article about Mostar and how to visit it while holidaying in Croatia.
You can do it as independently on a rented car (most Croatian rentals allow you to do it for an additional fee, usually from 25 to 175 euros in different offices), but it is best to choose a tour, which offers many from different cities in Central and Southern Dalmatia, including many such excursions to Mostar and from Makarska.
Here you could already see Bosnia and Herzegovina, to be honest I didn’t expect to see it from this angle. You feel like a bird that can see everything that is going on below
Then we were taken to the last point of our tour – the picnic site. It turned out to be a bit more difficult here. The bus could not get directly to the site.
We stopped 20-30 minutes walking from the site. The path runs through the mountains and leads upwards. It was hard to climb up, but still bearable, especially as at the end we had a meal waiting for us.
At the end we decided to take some breathtaking photos like from advertising brochures, so that we could go back to them again and feel the same feelings later on
At the end, when we had already reached the end point and everyone was very happy with themselves, the guide laid out treats for us, traditional Croatian sweets, warm drinks (tea, coffee) and whoever wanted to try herbal brandy.
In such an atmosphere we felt a strong sense of peace and tranquillity, nature was buzzing around, no cars were heard. I didn’t want to leave at all, at some point I even thought of coming here for camping, but I didn’t know if tents were allowed here. So we didn’t take any risks and drove back to Makarska with the sadness of parting.

I would also like to give these tips:
Being in the same place, people may have different impressions of the place. For example, some of our group did not like the fact that they had to walk up to some of the viewpoints, but soon their displeasure changed to admiration and delight.
Therefore, it is imperative to familiarise yourself with the attraction, routes, prices and other people’s opinions before travelling to interesting places. Although, after the trip, the impressions may differ from others, I still advise you to study other people’s reviews before your own trip.
Strengths: Stunning views of the Adriatic, coastline, numerous islands. There are various viewing platforms. Beautiful mountain nature, interesting active pastime.
Disadvantages: very difficult and dangerous road, it is difficult to go to the place on your own.
Although I’ve been to many nature parks and each one had its own highlight, this one surprised me in particular. First of all, the road to it. It turned out to be very difficult. At first, we thought to go to this park on our own, by rented car. But many of those who have been there warned and advised to drive with a guide and look around first, to understand how the way is and how difficult it is to drive there. After our tour I was convinced that going with a guide and an experienced driver was the right decision.
Serpentine on the way is very steep, it is difficult to hold the car, our guide sometimes out loud resented and cursed the road. But after the difficult road we were rewarded with gorgeous views, clean air and very pleasant atmosphere of the mountains.
Even though it was chilly, it did not affect my overall impression of the trip.
We went to Biokovo Park, which is located in the mountains and where we were waiting for a climb to the top of Sveti Juri – 1700 m (approximately) above sea level. We went there on a good minibus. We had a great driver – Thomas, as he said himself, nicknamed Schumacher. Very colourful, he spoke so emotionally that we understood him without translation.
The views at the place were amazing, you couldn’t take your eyes off. On the first observation deck it was still hot. At the second one I put on a jumper and then a windbreaker. At St George I put on a mackintosh offered by the driver, which turned out to be windproof anyway.
I was very cold, I should have brought a warmer jacket (take this into account). But there are a lot of impressions from this trip.
To say that the road is dangerous is not to say anything. At the same time, locals manage to keep vegetable gardens in these mountains – such a local sport.
Our guide was able to tell a lot of interesting stories related to this place and even some stories from his life. Fortunately, we were lucky to have him, the tour was not boring and very entertaining, it’s just a pity that he doesn’t go to other places.
