In this article, I will talk about SUP surfing, windsurfing and kitesurfing in Croatia. About prices, where to rent equipment, how much it costs to learn with a coach (group and individual), etc.
I have seen travelers who come to Croatia with their wing or board, settle down close to the sea, and practice their favorite water sport every day. Such an option can be interesting in two cases:
For all others, I recommend to rent for 1-2 days all the necessary equipment on the spot.
It is important to know: there is no surfing in Croatia, as the Adriatic is a very calm sea.
Therefore, its varieties are popular here, SAP surfing and windsurfing, and kitesurfing I saw only in two places in Croatia:
In all Croatian cities, on the beaches, there are rental outlets for active water sports. These outlets have the same name: Windsufring stattion. They also all look the same, as shown in the photo below.
Windsufring stattion for rental of equipment for active water sports (SUP surfing, windsurfing, kitesurfing, snorkeling)
We saw such spots in almost every seaside village we visited.
Not everywhere there are kitesurfing boards for rent, but everywhere, for sure, there are boards and paddles for SUP surfing and boards for windsurfing. Also, not everywhere has a coach from whom you can get lessons for an extra fee.
But, in general, in any, more or less, large city, you can find a rental station, where there is any water equipment and even with an instructor.
Water equipment for rent, at one of the stations
Windsurf stations are only open in high season and only in good weather.
This means that before going to the station, you should check the weather forecast for the current day. Because, for example, in strong winds, you will not be given a board or kayak.
As a rule, the stations are open from May to September, from 9 a.m. to sunset.

Prices generally don’t vary much throughout Croatia. Below, I will give the prices for 2022, in euros.
Additionally you can take a wetsuit suit – 3 euros/day and coral slippers – also, 3 euros/day.
Important to know: in case of renting equipment for 1 day, you must return it at sunset of the same day. Even if you took it at 12 noon, at lunchtime. Everywhere, in Croatia, “1 day” means, a daylight day, not 24 hours.
Below, a photo with prices at one of the windsurfing stations.

Note that the following is the cost of tuition only. The amounts shown do not include equipment rental prices.
Below are four types of courses we have seen in the training programs of different Windsurf stations:
It is important to know: windsurfing and surfing in Croatia is very popular practically all along the coast. But, Makarska Riviera, especially, stands out from the rest of the Croatian seaside regions.
The unique natural conditions of this place (this region, on the one hand, is closed by mountains and, by the sea, covered with long beaches), contribute not only to a great beach vacation, but also are perfect for learning to surf SAP surfing (thanks to the places where there are no waves), and windsurfing (thanks to the ideal wind, constantly blowing towards the coast).
Some rental stations ask you to leave your passport as a deposit, some do not. Therefore, it is better to have it with you. It is safe to leave your passport here, nothing will happen to it.
Almost everywhere, they give free thermal bag, where you can put valuables and tie to the board, or there are “storage rooms” at the station itself, in the form of an ordinary shelf. But I will note that in Croatia is safe and things can be left safely.
Don’t forget to take water and a snack with you, especially when you leave for half a day or more.
Nowadays, in Croatia it has become popular to organize SUP surfing tours at sunset or visiting certain architectural and natural sights, for example: a trip on the waves of the Adriatic and the river Jadro in Split, or a night tour on an LED board in Pula. That is to say, to places that you won’t find on your own without the help of a local guide.
Such tours can be booked in advance. A large selection of activities in Croatia can be viewed on the largest aggregator of excursions and active vacations in the country – GetYourGuide.
There are kayaking tours, SAP surfing tours, as well as boat and yacht trips. And it will definitely be cheaper than the tour companies.
In conclusion: Sapsurfing, windsurfing and kiting in Croatia are delightful, the nature, weather and sea are as good as it gets, add atmosphere to the physical activity and are truly exhilarating. But if that’s not enough for you, read more about rafting and kayaking in Croatia.
