Šibenik attractions

The main attractions of Šibenik are located in the old town. The historic center dates back to the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The Old Town was formed in the 15th-17th centuries and is one of the best preserved in Croatia.

Šibenik is known for its sacred architecture. There are more than a dozen ancient churches in the old town.

Church of St. James

The cathedral, included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. It is one of the most impressive masterpieces of Christian architecture on the Dalmatian coast. The cathedral was begun in 1431 and completely finished in 1536 and has a strict but beautiful facade.

An interesting feature of the cathedral is the frieze on its facade, with more than 70 unique faces of ordinary citizens of Šibenik

The Cathedral of St. James was built by the most famous architects of Croatia. The building combines Gothic and Renaissance styles. One of the most interesting features is the exquisite frieze outside the apse with more than 70 unique faces representing ordinary citizens of the 15th century.

The main feature of the Cathedral of St. James is that it is completely built of stone blocks, without the use of brick, wooden or metal ceilings.

You can find this architectural monument on the sea promenade; it’s visible from many points in Šibenik.

Entrance to the cathedral is paid, ticket price – about 4 €.

Many sculptures, stone ornaments, and pictorial images decorate the walls and interior of the cathedral, immersing visitors in the mysterious atmosphere of the Middle Ages

Church of St. Barbara

On one of the streets of the historic center of Šibenik is an attraction that attracts many tourists – the Church of St. Barbara. The building of this Catholic church was erected in the middle of the 16th century. Initially the church was dedicated to Saints Benedict and Nicholas, but subsequently it was re-consecrated in honor of St. Barbara.

Church of St. Barbara

This small Gothic church is one of the most beautiful churches in Šibenik. In the 18th century, a Turkish clock with a dial divided into 24 hour sectors and a bas-relief depicting an old coat of arms were installed on the bell tower. The clock was installed after the Ottomans completely left the city.

The dome of the bell tower was dismantled in the 19th century after an earthquake. The pediment of the building is crowned with an open belfry with three bells.

The church is decorated with interesting bas-reliefs. Above the main portal in a niche is a statue of St. Nicholas by a sculptor from Milan. On the north wall there’s a Gothic window.

But this active church attracts not only with its ancient architecture. The main thing it’s famous for is the museum of church art located within its walls. The interior boasts two unique altars. The walls of the church now house a small remarkable collection of sculptures and paintings from the 14th-18th centuries.

The exhibits of the museum of church art date back to the 14th-18th centuries, but there are also rarities dated to the 11th century. The museum’s exposition is striking in its richness and stylistic diversity; it features paintings, sculpture, jewelry, precious church utensils.

This attraction is located at: Kralja Tomislava 19, Šibenik, Croatia.

St. Michael's Fortress

The oldest defensive structure in Šibenik, located on a high rocky hill with stunning views of the medieval old town. The fort was founded more than 9 centuries ago.

The oldest surviving parts date back to the 13th century, but most of the surviving walls and structures date back to the 15th and 16th centuries. St. Michael’s Fortress was the main defensive structure of the medieval city.

St. Michael’s Fortress

St. Nicholas Fortress

St. Nicholas Fortress

Barone Fortress

Was built by the citizens of Šibenik in 1646 in two months before the Turkish attack.

Central Square of Šibenik

The heart of the old town, the center of public and social life of Šibenik since the Middle Ages and a battlefield in 1378 during the siege by the Venetians. The square has the city hall, several interesting historical buildings, and the Cathedral of St. James.

City Hall

One of the most beautiful buildings on the Central Square of Šibenik (besides the Cathedral of St. James). This magnificent example of Renaissance architecture was built in the mid-16th century by the famous architect Michele Sanmicheli.

The City Hall was bombed in 1943 and rebuilt in the post-war period

The two-story city hall building is located on Cathedral Square opposite the Cathedral of St. James. The facade of the city hall is a terrace with columns and arches – a characteristic detail of ancient architecture, protecting the premises from the hot southern sun. The openwork railing of the second-floor terrace is decorated with lion heads and floral ornaments.

On the sides of the facade, 200 years after the construction of the building, two stone staircases were added leading to the second floor. In 1943, this Šibenik landmark was damaged by bombing and was restored to its original appearance in the post-war period.

Now the city hall has lost its purpose; government offices and the meeting hall have been converted into a marriage registration room and a restaurant

Four Wells Square

Another interesting place is the Four Wells Square. The wells were built in the mid-15th century to provide the population with water during numerous sieges.

Palaces of Šibenik

Among the ancient palaces of Šibenik, the most impressive are the prince’s palace, also called the duke’s palace (a medieval Gothic building that was the residence of the Venetian ruler) and the bishops’ palace (a Gothic-Renaissance building from the 15th century).

Prince’s Palace

The prince’s palace houses the city museum – one of the best small museums we visited in all of Croatia. On several levels inside the old stone building, the history of Šibenik’s development is presented, from archaeological artifacts of ancient human settlements dating back to BC.

The exhibits are organized into four periods: prehistoric period, antiquity, late antiquity, and the Middle Ages (end of the Venetian period ~ 1800). The earliest artifacts date back to the Danilo era about 4,000 – 4,500 years BC. Tours are conducted in English.

Harbor and port of Šibenik

Šibenik has attractions in great abundance, which is not surprising given its thousand-year history. But even if they didn’t exist, the harbor with the port alone would be enough to leave unforgettable impressions of this city on its guests.
